Corporation Trade Names or
“Doing Business As” (DBAs)
A corporation can only have one legal name. However, it may have several “trade names” that it operates under. Businesses sometimes use different names for different divisions or products and services offered.
A corporation must register these names in the province that it is located in with the provincial government department that governs business registrations. These trade names are also sometimes referred to as “Doing business As” or DBAs.
The same rules regarding the selection of a corporation’s legal name apply to tradenames. It is therefore safer to proceed with a Business Name Report before registering these trade names.
Tradenames are particularly useful for corporations that are “numbered corporations” , for example : 123456 Canada Inc. Tradenames allow you to use a business name that is more appealing.
